Still Asleep

This past Thursday, M was all set to spend the day at Mimi's house. Granddaddy and Grandmama Smith were all set to come too, and I know they were looking forward to it.

But that morning, Granddaddy fell in their bathroom at home. When Grandmama got to him, he was trying to get up and didn't remember exactly how he fell or what he hit. An ambulance came. The paramedics checked his vitals, said he looked fine, and left. But as the morning went on, he was not quite fine, so they made an appointment with his regular doctor at 10:30 a.m. At that appointment, his doctor recognized the gravity of the situation and sent him to the ER in an ambulance.

There he was diagnosed with two large blood clots, but later they started calling it "bilateral bleeding of the brain." They rushed him to Huntsville Hospital as soon as a room opened up. He needed surgery to drain the blood.



Friday morning, K, M and I went to the hospital . I saw him at 10:30. He was so so sleepy but did murmur a few responses. The nurse said the sleepiness was from all the blood on his brain.

Meanwhile, our little ray of sunshine was busy brightening up the waiting room and giving his Grandmama and Mimi something fun to think about for awhile.






Around 5 p.m., they did surgery while we waited in the surgery waiting room, which was a zoo compared to the "recliner room" as we had started calling it. Around 5:45 the surgeon called. Everything had went well!

That was three and a half days ago. Granddaddy is still asleep. The doctors have said that for older people, it sometimes takes longer to shake the anesthesia. So right now, we are in wait and pray mode. At each of the four daily visit times, two family members or friends can go to his bedside. We have played bluegrass music and Malachi videos, and we have talked about all his favorite topics: his buddies at the store, fishing and racing. Mom even told him she needed him to hurry and wake up because she had water all under her fridge and needed him to fix it (which unfortunately is true). But still he sleeps and still we pray.

We don't know what will happen next, but thankfully we do know the One who is in control.
